Phases of growth of an internet user in fandom, circa 2024
0-10 yrs - if you're on the internet it's either your parent(s) posting pics of you to facebook or you're watching youtube kids with less supervision than you actually need 'cos there are some weird as shit channels out there labeled 'for kids'. 11-12 - somehow they gave you a smartphone but you're very busy watching minecraft or roblox youtube channels and video-chatting your friends and you're probably into Pokemon. 13-16 - You are convinced only fellow teens your age belong on the internet sharing memes, because this is literally where ALL your peers are. What do you MEAN there are older people here on [social media site] that you can actually interact with?? Ew! 17-18 - The weight of IRL expectations is slowly crushing your creative spirit but you persevere. Time to apply to college. 19-20 - The end of your life is nigh. Also you're in college now trying to be an adult. What is happening?? You can vote now???? 21-24 - College, graduation, and discovering the wonderful surprises awaiting you in the economy earlier generations have left you (right now? it's shit. sorry.) You're still here doing what you enjoy. But are you letting your life slip away between your fingers? 25-29 - The 13-16 yr olds react like they're amazed at you for being on the internet but this is where you have your audience/friends/ways to talk about your favorite shows, which you STILL HAVE THANK YOU VERY MUCH. Your biggest fear is hitting 30 and having nothing to show for it but you've been making a lot of adulting mistakes and learning from those mistakes in a big way. It really stings when teenagers scream in astonishment that you're over 25. 30-39 - Now the gap between you and the 13-16 yr olds is bigger than ever but you look at them and see your past self and oof...but they deserve that chance to learn and grow just like you. And now you also know they will experience what you have: the neverending weird looks from whoever is currently 13-16. Such is the curse of aging. You may have a kid or two yourself by now, too. It doesn't bother you as much when you see polls asking about what age you are as a fanfic writer. Your twenties were miserable but it's getting better now that you kinda know what you're doing. The only drawback is the random aches and pains. Hey you! Quit shrimping! I see that! You're gonna regret it! 40+ (and I do mean the plus) - You were here before all these damn kids. How dare they try to cite the Deep Magic at you, you were there when it was written (the Deep Magic: the first Star Trek fanfic ever posted on the internet). You witness the very real loss of knowledge and wisdom of the internet that seemed like it had been around just ten years ago, as no one knows to even look for the history of anything. The landscape has really changed, but you're still here doing what you enjoy. Only difference is you can see the big picture now. When someone pulls out the famous 'do you know what this old tech is' pop quiz, you get excited when you see something familiar.

Obey Me! NB "Identity Crisis" Pop Quiz
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Very cute event!
Potion gone wrong (kinda - it was a supposed to be a prank on Lucifer) resulting in body swap!
Really like how everyone worked together and encouraged each other to get their tasks done (human world fashion show, fruit eating contest, paperwork etc.). One of my favorite parts was Satan making the fruit eating event more appealing to Asmo by asking the organizer if Asmo could film himself.
Also loved how Solomon showed how well knew Asmo through his actions and made sure to respect his body/person TwT (and Asmo's routines) He even worried about not meeting Asmo's expectations!
Got a little concerned alone in Satan's room...
One of his lines was "...Now that I'm myself again, do you mind if I touch you?"
Which seemed a bit uncomfortably bold if you are not romantically pursuing Satan.
The response options were:
"Not at all." Which I picked.
Or something along the lines of 'I want to touch you too.'
Both not great options if you don't want to move forward as both insinuate you are okay with 'more.'
Luckily with the option I picked resulted in "Okay, then let me hold your hand." So, it ended up working out for me as my MC's relationship with Satan is 'complicated' and she wouldn't want to lead him on. But during that uncertain moment my stomach dropped thinking I would either sound harsh in my rejection or that I would not be aloud to refuse. But despite this overall I really enjoyed this event - could possibly even consider it one of my favorites this year! :3
Food Mentioned
cookies made with hellfire rose jam
Satan's Birthday 2024 🎂
(My Birthday was on the 18th! Really enjoyed the birthday messages and stuff this year 🤗 this was like the first Birthday in 4 years that I was not sick lol yay progress!! 💜 wasn't able to go to the cat café this year, but got amazing souffle pancakes from a place called Fuwa Fuwa - took my 'son' Yuji with us too xD)
Tumblr media
(Pancakes: matcha tiramisu
Drink: Nutella hazelnut latté)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Satan's Birthday event was alright.
The plot was cute; wake him up, go to a secluded movie theater, special private time with cats, reading, and cake/singing, then a group party with everyone after.
Think my only complaint really was that the 'interactive movie theater' wasen't really a movie theater per say. There was no scheduled movie/plot. It was more of just an interactive room like the holodecks in star trek. 🌟
Like to picture he gave me a lil forhead kissy after our 'our love yous' :3

I'm curious, what are some of your favorite bits of pop culture and history/law/etc intersecting?
Stuff like:
Historical metaphors, subtext, and coding that get muddled the farther we get from it's release (i.e. the Subtext that Ian Chesterton from Doctor Who survived the Blitz)
Pop culture influencing history or laws (how the Quiz Show Scandal changed how we watched TV)
Or other similar things. (Uhura in Star Trek, the history of non white dolls, violets as a lesbian symbol, etc)

Being exclusively a fan of media that ended years ago & is still holding onto a fanbase but is not really super Culturally Relevant in the present time (Mass Effect trilogy... Deep Space 9...) is kind of a weird experience at my age in a way that's hard to put into words
I think I'm probably only noticing it for the first time myself because I haven't really interacted with fandom spaces at all before. My irl friends and I don't have overlapping interests, I avoid social media like the plague and I prefer to just rotate the media in my brain like watching it go around in a microwave, but it's like... here I feel like a baby. When this media was new I was Not Born Yet (DS9) or in Middle School (Mass Effect 3). And I find these things 10, 20+ years after they ended and become absolutely obsessed with them but so much of the posts and art and fanfic about these are from so many years ago and it's somehow intimidating!!! And that doesn't make sense!!! I am not a baby I am a grown ass adult with a degree!!! I gotta stop overthinking this everyone is really nice I just need to not worry and have a fun time and remember all art is derivative holy shit 2 cakes!!! I am doing this for me not for an audience or someone who's gonna give me a pop quiz at the end!!! AAAAAAAAAAAA
anyway im going to beam autism directly into my art app and draw the mass effect crew in star trek uniforms

Babylon 5 Rewatch Season 3 Ep 03 A Day in the Strife
The Centauri/Narn peace continues to be one-sided as the current government sends Na'Far, a Narn dignitary, to Babylon 5 to fetch back G'Kar who is the last free member of the Kha'Ri. Meanwhile a Star Trek episode happens when a probe appears to give the command staff a pop quiz. Also Garibaldi challenges Franklin on his substance abuse. They eat Italian.
ALSO! DEVELOPMENT! For those of you out there who don't have HBO Max, all of Babylon 5 is now on IMDBtv! Watch the original series before they start putting out the remake for maximum in-joke appreciation! Straczynski said the new show is going to be a brand new take on the material, so you won't be spoiling yourself for the new one to watch the old one. Maybe I'll Pic an Episode the new series when it drops, too! Guess I better get this rewatch a-goin'
Things I liked and Didn't like about A Day in the Strife Below:
Things I like about A Day in the Strife
Ta'Lon is one of my favorite characters in this show. He doesn't show up often, but when he does he brings such a warmth and gentle strength it really leaves an impact. It was great seeing him get a drink with Sheridan after their escape together in the last season. It's a great handshake to the past to have this character come back and it feels like the two of them actually did forge a friendship that survived Freind of the Day status. Seeing Ta'Lon standing behind Na'Far feels wrong on a deep level, since it's obvious that Na'Far is short for Nafarious, but following him around means that Ta'Lon is inside all these political dealings. He is able to give G'Kar some well-informed advice, and explains the meaning of the K'Tok! Aka the sword JMS handed him to make him look different than other Narns. I kid Ta'Lon. Marry me.
I love G'Kar. I love how brave all the Narns are. I love how much it both heartens and hurts G'Kar to see the faith his people have in him. It's quite a burden to put not only the fate of their people on his shoulders, but the blood of all their families.
Finally confronting the drug abuse storyline that's been simmering under the surface is a good thing. I appreciate that Garibaldi had the hard talk with Franklin and that we got to see it. It felt very authentic to the twos' relationship as friends, and esp with Garibaldi's own substance issues... its a shame this wasn't the end of it, but a nice talk and a promise rarely is the end of a dependency, so even in that it's better storytelling. Also Franklin having a Stim problem makes sense within his story and his position. It's not just a drug problem for the sake of a drug problem, we as an audience can see how it would arise. Makes it a better representation of such a thing than other shows sometimes do.
Londo demonstrates to Vir what he considers "good politics." Which is to do what he must do as best as he can... and he's real good at it, too. Him talking to Na'Far about the executions is chilling. He can be a real monster when he wants, and Vir is appalled to watch it. This is what convinces Londo to send him to Minbar, to protect him. To save that little light of good inside Vir that Londo, himself, used to have. These characters are so goddamn complex you all. They love each other, they think things that are different than their behavior, ugh this goddamn /show/. And that scene with Delenn where she's convinced and Londo is evil now, but sees a little crack in the mask herself when he seeks her out in order to send Vir to Minbar. Londo loses two more friends. He really is alone and has no one to blame but himself.
Things I don't like about A Day In the Strife
The space probe plot really aches of "The Earth Force folk need something to do" syndrome. I made the joke that it's a Star Trek episode, and that wasn't to call it bad, but it's very in tone with the high-minded syndicated space show. Such a plot would make an excellent TOS episode without changing the twist or anything... but this isn't TOS. This is B5. This is 1995. It feels a little derivative and unexplored. That's a small complaint in a good episode, though. On to the next!

It’s a universal fact that no one likes taking finals. Obviously the tests, the presentations, the papers are the worst part. But the buildup isn’t great either.
Mark grinds his teeth while watching you from across the room. You’re focused on the textbook laid out in front of you where you’re spread out on the floor. All the other available surfaces are taken up by your peers. Lucas and his work are sprawled over half the kitchen island, Taeil on the La-Z boy. Mark, Jungwoo, and Taeyong are sequestered on the sofa.
He turns another page in his music history book without reading a single line. Instead his eyes follow the curve of your spine exposed from your shirt rucking up after you’d settled onto the rug. Your leg is hitched almost lovingly over your discarded backpack. While you do calculations for physics, Mark tries to calculate the last time you two were intimate. He can’t even remember because Taeyong keeps asking questions to fill the holes in his notes about orchestral composition.
Eventually Mark just tosses Taeyong his notes so he can spend a bit more time studying the way you gnaw on a pen thoughtfully. His blood feels like it’s simmering by the time he gets the courage to ask if you want to ‘take a walk’ to his place for a study break. But then—
You check the time and then look up from your scratch paper, “Jungwoo, ready to go?”
“Basically. Let’s get there a little bit early so we can stop and get coffee first before the study group. I really need it, I’m dying.”
“Oh, good idea.”
If it weren’t for the fact that there are still a bunch of people in the room, Mark might have wept a little bit. The preparation for finals has left basically no time for ‘alone time’, and it’s taking its toll on him. He does his best to tamp down on the frustration and convinces Taeyong to quiz him on Tchaikovsky.

Mark pushes you against the brick side wall of his apartment building exterior a few days later. You let out a surprised but pleased sound and let him grind against the curve of your hip. His breath comes out in hot sighs on your neck, interspersed with small grunts. He missed having your skin under his palms and practically purrs when you rake your teeth over his adam’s apple.
“You know you have to be at the studio in 5 minutes, right?”
“Kun can wait,” he huffs. With both hands he fondles your ass slightly rougher than normal. It gives him the leverage he needs to press your clothed hips even closer. “He’s always late anyway. I really have, like, 20 minutes.”
“Is 20 minutes enough?”
He wants it to be enough. He wants it to be enough so bad. But this collaboration is worth 35% of his grade and thanks to Kun’s characteristic tardiness, they’re way behind schedule. Besides that, he’s feeling so pent up that 20 minutes would probably just be a fraction of the foreplay. Mark’s silence is enough of an answer to your question, so you redo the buttons of your shirt that he opened prior and smooth down his hair.
“Don’t start anything you can’t finish.”
His forehead hits your shoulder and he lets out a sigh.
“Yeah, yeah,” he mutters. “But one of these days, it’ll happen.”
He gives you a look that makes goosebumps break out on your arms. You send him off with a peck and make the trek to the library.
Tumblr media
A few days later, you’re back at Mark’s place. You’re cozied up to him on the two person sofa while some of the others work in the other parts of the living room. Mark’s dorm is a one person apartment dorm, so there’s less room than in your suite. One by one though, they start leaving. Johnny ends up leaving because the diorama he’s building for engineering gets too big to continue there. Jungwoo and Doyoung leave for another physics study group. You stick around because the last one wasn’t helpful for you. Yuta mentions something about going back to his and Johnny’s room for a video game break. That leaves you, Mark, and Donghyuck.
Donghyuck doesn’t budge at first and continues to type away at his computer. But when Mark’s hand stops circling your ankle aimlessly and begins making a purposeful trail up your leg, he gets the hint and packs up while cursing under his breath. The door slams shut and Mark gets up to go make sure it’s locked. The sound of his footsteps echoing through the halls and doors opening and closing pulls you out of your focus.
“What are you doing,” you sit up on your arms, peering down the dark hallway. Mark emerges looking like an excited puppy.
“Everyone left.”
“I see that,” you say. He pulls his hoodie and shirt over his head in one swift move, then begins working on the opening of his jeans. “Oh.”
Immediately, you begin shucking off your own bottoms. Mark leads the way to his room with you shedding layers behind him. You laugh at the speed he uses to run to his room and pick up your own pace. Even though the apartment is empty, he still closes the door behind him like you’re being chased. As soon as he locks up, he’s tackling you to the bed.
“Wait, wait,” your breath comes out in amused heaves as he swipes at your shirt. “Don’t you have to meet with Kun again?”
Mark doesn’t look away from where he’s working on unhooking your bra, but he shakes his head. “I stayed up ‘til 4 last time so I could finish it.”
“Mark, that’s not healthy.”
“I’m plenty healthy,” he grins and grinds against you as proof. He definitely feels healthy and ‘awake’.
You pull him in with a matching grin and kiss him until you’re panting. Meanwhile, he takes his time inching your soaked panties down your thighs. You kick them off into some unknown direction and hitch a leg over his hips to pull his groin to yours. The slick that welcomes him has him groaning a curse into your mouth.
“I’ve been thinking about this for so long,” he mumbles.
“Yeah?”
“Yeah.” Mark sneaks a hand down between your bodies and rubs lightly at you. “Every little thing you did drove me crazy this week.”
“I know, me too.” Your moans act as accompaniment for the slick percussion he sets up between your folds.
“As soon as I was too busy to touch you, I had to touch you.”
You let Mark edge you on his fingers for a good while before rolling over so you can take him into your mouth. He’s all soft sighs then, caressing your face with his dry hand and looking down at you with worried brows. When he hits the back of your throat, his hips start to stutter up.
“D-don’t start something you can’t finish.”
Part of you wants to spite him and finish him off right there. After a few months of having sex, you know some good ways to get him off efficiently. But the way you clench around nothing at the sound of his moans tells you that you’d rather he finish inside you. So you let him pull you in by the hips and spend some time kissing his own flavor off your tongue before sinking down on his length. It’s been long enough that there’s a pleasing tightness behind the stretch and you run your nails over his pecs lightly. When you’ve adjusted, you begin to rock fluidly over him.
“Shit.” The curse is so quiet, you nearly miss it.
His head is thrown back and the way his jaw clenches tell you that he’s likely already experiencing some sort of honeyed agony. Judging by the veins protruding in his forearms, he’s resisting the urge to take control of the rhythm and set an athletic pace after all the waiting. You’re grateful for the patience because you’re still gathering your bearings. Leaning down, your chest grazes against his and you leave a kiss on his slack mouth.
Your words come out airy as the gradual up and down becomes easier, slippery.
“I missed this.”
“Tell me,” he whispers.
“I missed the feeling of being full,” you can feel him pulse a bit. “And I miss you coming inside.”
“Fuck, that’s hot,” he laughs like he can’t believe the current situation.
Mark plants his feet onto the mattress then to meet you halfway. The extra effort on his part has him hitting deeper inside of you. You feel fuller and that only makes you drip around him more. The sounds are obscene and you might be inclined to slow down out of embarrassment if it were any other time. But you feel parched like you can’t get enough of him. Each thrust forces a wanton moan out of you. The best you can do is bring a hand up to your mouth so you can dull the sounds by biting a knuckle. Mark isn’t having any of it, though.
“Let me hear you. There’s no one else, let me hear you.”
Suudenly he sits up and takes you into his lap. The angle makes stars pop up in the corners of your vision and also gives him the opportunity to lap teasingly at your nipple. It also puts your mouth much closer to his ear. He can’t piston up into you quite as well, but in this position he can grind against the spots that he knows make your breathing hitch. As a music major, perhaps he’s more sensitive to auditory stimulus. Your broken pleas are almost enough to set him over the edge. To make things last, Mark focuses on alternating between gentle, wet kisses to your chest and letting his teeth scrape against you ever so slightly. The sensation changes from smokey to sweet. Your hand tangles in his hair and you let the moans pour out. No better catharsis could have come during finals week, you think.
“Mark. Mark, I’m gonna come.”
“Same, just—wait for me.” He rearranges you quickly. You’re on your back, this time with your feet pointing to the wrong side of bed. Mark hitches one of your legs over his hips and returns to the heavy pace before. You tilt your hips just right and suddenly his thrusts are zeroed in on a spot inside you that has you crying out and arching below him. The orgasm that washes over you makes you grip him like a snug vice. The pleasure surges over him and draws a long whimper from between his lips. He spills into you in spurts of warmth before pulling out and collapsing next to you.
“How was that?” You’re sure you could predict the answer from the contented way he closes his eyes.
“Great.”
His answering grin is sleepy but he still looks handsome. Even with the dark circles from working so hard as of late and covered in a fresh coat of sweat. He looks like he’s fallen asleep, but when you go to plant a kiss on his lips, he moves up to deepen it. A warm palm pulls you in gently by the nape of your neck. You let him kiss you for a few moments before pulling back.
“Where you goin’?”
“Doyoung is studying at the library. I thought I’d get some last minute studying in before the test tomorrow night.”
“No, stay. What do you need me to do? I can test you. Give me your flashcards, I’ll test you.”
You pretend to weigh your options. Leaving the comfort of bed just to go over one topic and then chat with Doyoung before bed or staying in with your naked boyfriend and trading kisses for correct answers.
“Babe, really?” He whines when your decision making takes too long.
“Just kidding. I’ll stay.”

Posts That Could Start a Flame War: A Tale of Two Fandoms
I think I've cracked the code on the divide between stereotypically male and stereotypically female modes of fandom interaction.
On average:
Men are more likely to engage with their favourite works by cherishing and revering what is already there.
Women are more likely to engage with their favourite works by expanding it through adding their own material to it.
This theory explains much of what I observe in fandom circles which comes down to a fundamental misunderstanding of how people show their appreciation of a work.
For example, it explains much of the observable "gatekeeping man" phenomenon that women claim to witness all the time. It is an easy enough principle to understand: a woman who has been shunned by her peers for much of her formative/adolescent years for her fringe interests finally finds a male-majority group that purports to love the thing(s) she loves - but upon entering it, she is immediately confronted by a man (who for the sake of the stereotype, is slightly overweight) who gives her, in her perception, a pop quiz about every last detail of the show. And of course as a new member of the fandom, she feels as though she is failing some test that she shouldn't need to pass in order to 'prove' that she likes the thing.
What I think is missing from this conversation is the fact that, in a male-majority fandom, this is the slightly overweight man’s way of expressing his love for the piece of media. This is a normal fan interaction to him. He hasn't necessarily been in a situation before, especially in a male-majority fandom group, where someone else doesn't know how to engage with the work by obsessing over every minor detail of the world as he does. She probably has a fantastically written, lovingly crafted AU fanfiction which explores the future of the series if one of the characters hadn't died, but he doesn't necessarily know how to broach that subject because that's not what he came here to do.
And the problem is, each gender (roughly speaking) thinks that their way is either the best way to engage with fandom, or the only way they know how to do, and this causes the gulf that is at the heart of a lot of fandom discourse on sexism and erasure. Take for example the idea, persistent for a fair few years now, that women were always part of Star Trek fandom, and erased from it. This is technically correct, but misleading. The media's perception of the male Star Trek fan, such as those who confronted William Shatner on Saturday Night Live to ask what the passcode to his locker was, or the fans in Galaxy Quest who happened to know the exact plots, layouts, and other detail-oriented facts about every single episode (which comes in handy when the real life actors need to perfectly recreate a sequence from one of the episodes), is definitely a male-dominated perception of that fandom, but, and this is the tricky bit, not unjustifiably so. Women are not erased from it because women are by and large not part of it.
The problem is that there are two Star Trek fandoms. One of them catalogues the precise layout of the U.S.S Enterprise with such unerring dedication that they can instantaneously call it to mind when asked. The other writes homoerotic Kirk/Spock slash fiction and coins the term "Mary Sue", to fill a hole of untapped potential that they perceive in the subtext or the unseen portions of the series.
And seldom do the two actually meet on common ground.
This is also a problem you can see regarding the SJW/dudebro rhetorical framework of reactions to franchise remakes, sequels, reboots, etc. Most people aren't trashing your desire to partake in fandom because they think you don't belong there. Some of them are. Most people aren't tarnishing your favourite media because they're SJWs. Some of them are. But the bigger problem by far is that there are two different audiences who want to do two different things with continuations of their favourite franchises.
See, if I can de-gender these stereotypes a bit, the cataloguing fans, knowing everything they do about their favourite works, have a deep and abiding sense in their heads of what these characters and worlds are supposed to look like. They value the continuity of that world and those characters between installments. Any substantial deviation from that is anathema to them because it means they need to rewrite details of a character or setting - and to them, loving the character involves loving each little one of their details too. Having to lose a detail of the character in service to a new, unfamiliar detail, is like losing a part of the character itself.
For the fanwork fans, I’m much more a cataloguing fan than a fanwork fan so I have to guess a bit, but I would reckon they they love to create alternate interpretations of things, so a complete reworking of a character’s existing motivations, characterizations, plausible actions, is not complete anathema to them and in fact only heightens their enjoyment of the characters more. They value the unexplored territory of a world, the “What if?”s and the missed opportunities that make an excellent blank canvas for alternative interpretations (their own, for example) to run wild.
Hmm. Continuity vs. unexplored territory. It’s easy to see how those values could clash.
Star Wars is a great example of this. The Last Jedi unequivocally slaughtered Luke Skywalker - not just literally, but also the conception of his character that many cataloguing fans have had in their head. The reason why the prequel trilogy was merely “a series of badly made movies that are canon I guess” whereas the sequel trilogy is touted as “Disney burying Star Wars” (with one notable exception which I’ll get to in a minute) is that, for all its faults, the prequel trilogy built a world and a series of character motivations that, with the sole exception of midichlorians, was consistent enough with the Jedi and the characters of Luke, Obi-Wan and Yoda that cataloguing fans had grown up with in the original trilogy. And midichlorians were easy enough to ignore if you only overlooked one very short practically inconsequential scene in Episode I.
The crime of The Last Jedi was to create a vision of Luke Skywalker that was fundamentally incompatible with the ‘established’ version of him that cataloguing fans had seen previously.
As for the fanwork fans, again much of this is guesswork, but I know that one of the most fertile grounds for fanfiction writers to furrow is the torture and emotional traumatization of their favourite characters, as long as putting them through the wringer gives them some kind of closure or catharsis at the end. The version of Luke Skywalker that appears in The Last Jedi is not inconsistent with this, because it ends with him getting the closure of dying knowing that his cynicism and pessimism was spent, and in its place there was hope and peace in his heart. He also gets, after letting Kylo Ren run him through with a lightsaber to negligible effect, a certain catharsis in his demonstration of how impotent the rage of a Sith Lord can be vs. the calm inner peace of a Jedi. TLJ also fulfills the fanwork fan’s need for expanding upon untapped potential by showing us Leia’s Force powers in action. For cataloguing fans who are concerned with the minutiae of what The Force can and cannot do, this was ridiculous, but for a fanwork fan who grew up idolizing Princess Leia, it only makes sense that her connection to The Force would be something incredibly powerful but also largely non-violent.
The Mandalorian, on the other hand. is currently being touted by all types of fans as a love letter to Star Wars, and for people who hated the sequels, it is the sequels that the original trilogy deserved. Having not seen it myself, I would guess that this is because it walks a very fine line between maintaining continuity with just about all the minutiae of world- and character-building that cataloguing fans of the original trilogy hold dear, but also in fulfilling a lot of the untapped potential of the Star Wars universe, and answering a few unanswered questions, that the fanwork fans crave. The one notable divide I saw was a lady complaining quite loudly that the inclusion of Boba Fett in the series was an inexplicable case of pandering to dudebro fanboys who don’t need to be pandered to (remember: each thinks their way of doing fandom is the best way). While I understand that fanwork fans desire to tread new ground in a series where Boba Fett has already been done to death, I also understand the cataloguing fan’s desire to establish continuity in a series such as this, and I am hard-pressed to think of a suitable piece of Star Wars media for Boba Fett to do a new cameo in, than a TV series that is explicitly about characters who are like Boba Fett doing things that Boba Fett would also have done.
The questions remain whether fandoms of such a size can or even should heal their own internal divides. To answer those, we would first need to find common ground where everyone understands that their modes of engaging with their favourite fandoms are different and they carry different expectations of the media they love. This approach alone may help to heal the divide a bit - knowing the difference between erasure from a fandom and simply looking at the wrong one is a subtle but significant difference. The task of understanding why a continuation of a series resonates with some people but utterly alienates others needs a better and more nuanced approach than to assume bad faith or ignorance on the part of the other people, or to generate a tired bigot/SJW dichotomy.
Don’t assume that people are into something for the same reasons you are. Remember that people can dislike something that you like, without reference to the reasons for which you like it, while still understanding it.
